5 pm usually signals the end of workday in the United Kingdom. However in other countries this end of workday period may vary in other countries but it usually a little after 5 pm or a little before.

It is usually the end of a usual eight-hour or nine-hour work period and people may choose to do different things at this period depending on personal preferences or the culture of the location where they reside.

Some return home only to go out later for a little leisure having had a hard day’s work and accomplished their tasks for the day.

Certain people may not opt to go home directly and may seek their leisure first before getting back to their abodes.

This includes people who proceed to the pubs or other center of leisure after 5 pm at the end of the workday, for a drink or two before they get home.

Certain jobs don’t follow this schedule for various reasons. This includes jobs that involve establishments which need to run on a 24 hour basis with day shifts and night shifts.

These night shifts may start sometime around 6 pm and end the next morning other jobs may require some form of paid overtime as well necessitating an extension to the existing or preconceived workdays which most people are used to. However most regular end of workdays are more or less a relation to the 5 pm time period.
